Yup. Functioning CD-R drives work much better than broken ones.

check your symlinks, /etc/fstab entries and related items. It may well be that some programs are acting up for you also.
ls -l /dev/cdrom* and cat /etc/fstab have become routine, for me, lately.
I doubt hardware fails so quickly. Unless it is an IBM travelstar 2.5 inch IDE drive.
