I stumbled across a notice for one of these kits. This site offers a kit for making a simple working facsimile of a 'Berliner Gramophone Turntable' and one for a 'Cup Phonograph Kit in Edison Style.'
Check out http://verycoolthings.com/vct/Neo_getpage.cgi?page=itemtoy.html&itemID=13460&cool=yes and notice the link to the other. These are mostly educational toys. Plastic, paper, batteries. But they supposedly work and demonstrate the principles. I'm getting the 'Berliner' turntable. You can record and playback on hard plastic surfaces, like the back of an old CD or a plastic plate. The 'Edison Style' one records/plays back on a plastic drinking cup. Neat! There are pix on the site, worth a look. I'll let you know how it goes.
