I like to be philosophical about this. Just as the human body reacts 
negatively to stress when it is not relieved over a period of time, so would 
the 75-100 year old main springs of a phonograph or gramophone that remain 
wound up over periods of time without relief. I cannot speak for those who 
have taken an opposite approach, I can only state that I have always taken 
the "wind them down" approach, and my machines have never popped a spring in 
all the years I have been collecting, and playing them.
