I just picked up an Ambrola 30 in need of new veneer on both sides and top.
Does anyone have a ?sure fire? method for removing the old veneer? The
machine is also in need of a crank and grill.

Just as an aside
 my first cylinder machine was a 30 I purchased in 1968. I
bought it instead of an engagement ring for my future wife. The marriage
last almost as long as the Ambrola. I?ve not been an active collector for
some time, but due try to get to Union every year to renew old friendships.
This machine was just an offer I couldn?t refuse.

Any help is appreciated.

Bob:

When I got my Amberola DX about 30 years ago, the veneer on the top was
badly damaged and much of it was missing. The wood was pretty dry and I was
able to pry off the remaining veneer with a putty knife. I sanded the top
down and applied some new veneer using carpenters glue and a stack of
encyclopedias to keep it flat while the glue dried. By the way, I got the
new veneer in a lumber yard. After drying, I sanded down the new veneer,
stained it, and then applied varnish. It doesn't look too bad for the work
of a teenage kid!

You might want to get Eric Reiss's book "The Compleat Phonograph". It goes
into a lot of detail about refinishing damaged cabinets to achieve
professional results.
