I was at Ron Dethlefson's relatively recently, and he made some leak-tightening
experiments with a common Amberola 30. I was amazed at the sound! He did the
same with a Columbia Q, and it was amazing how much sound issued from the horn!
I am going to try something with my Amberola V and see what kind of sound I can
get out of it...

Leak tight is the way to go. The "O" ring will improve the sound. The
improvement is a
function of how much leak there was before inserting the "O" ring. You can hear
the
difference.

My thoughts turned to my Edison machines and the reproducer/horn connection.
Was it really
airtight as I have read? Could it be improved if not? I decided to try a simple
test. I bought an
'O' ring....1 1/16" O.D. x 15/16 I.D. x 1/16" thick....this is the exact size
of the end of the
reproducer. I placed the ring inside the horn against the stop and inserted the
reproducer.
When I turned the lock ring I could feel the O ring compress against the stop.
Then I tried a
record...a pleasant surprise...I COULD hear a difference. (All the better to
hear the Ramblers
and Adrian Rollini on bass sax) I equipped all my Edison machines with this .47
gasket and
made a beeline to make this post. I'd like somebody else to try this and see
what they have to
say about it. I don't *think* I'm hearing things.....
