Since it is a glazed ceramic, the smell was gone after a thorough
washing.  Your tip is a good one to keep in mind though.

Ron -- I have no idea how old it is, but I have a tip about getting rid
of the smoke.  If you bury it in a fine white powder cat litter like
Catsan (unused, of course) for a while (like a few weeks), when you
uncover it the smell will be gone. Cat litter is designed to absorb
odors.
