I have seen some very decent looking Victor Vs on ebay over the past couple of years (without oak horns) in the $2000 range...the one last night didn't look so hot to me either. Fortunately, nice original Vs turn up locally here at auctions a few times a year.
Funny, the Victor V is my holy grail machine as well. One just sold at a local auction here with speartip horn in super original condition for $4500 and I thought that was a bit high.
