I noticed there is some discussion about grill cloths and I have to ask a
related question. I am in the process of restoring an oak Salter record
cabinet. Unfortunately, the insides are missing. I have some very good
pictures to go by but need to ask about the felt on the record shelves. What
kind of felt or material is used on record cabinets. This one has about 80
individual slats to hold one record each. I would think that the felt has to
be much thinner than regular turntable felt. Maybe pool table material?
Supplier suggestions? Any help with this question would be greatly
appreciated.
Thanks,
Ken B.

Ken:
You're correct in that the material for the Salter cabinet must be
thin. Pool table material might work, but try for a "medium" shade of green if
possible. I've seen green felt material (slightly more coarse than turntable
felt) at Joanne Fabrics that would be quite good for this. Your job will be
made easier in knowing that the felt only wraps around the ends of the
cardstock
supports and is no more than 3/4" wide on the upper surfaces. The unseen
part of the support is raw cardstock. Hope this helps you - -
By the way, these fabric stores are usually good sources for plain
grille cloth - especially if you have a tattered sample with you to match.
