Greetings Keith: There have been over 30 Fireside Edison machines on eBay during the last year. The prices ranged from $130 for a machine missing the horn and the desirable 2-4 minute K Reproducer to $1,376 for a machine fitted with a 10 panel Cygnet Horn but with a 4 minute only H Reproducer. Have your friend start following the Firesides for a length of time and a nice one will come up frequently. The reproduction horn will likely cost about $250 for the correct one down to $25 for the simple 14" brass-belled witches hat reproduction. Tell her not to feel badly about missing a machine on eBay as the common machines come along on a regular clip. The Fireside Model A is an excellent choice for a dual speed machine when equipped with a K Reproducer. It was designed for that job. The closest machine in the Standard series would be a Model D with both 2 minute and 4 minute Reproducers or a Model F with an S Reproducer. The problem with the Model F Reproducer is that it often cannot be disassembled to renew the rubber diaphragm gaskets but it has the distinct advantage of better sound with a larger diaphragm. Lastly beware, there are a lot of junk machines out there and eBay has more than it's share. Look over any machine you are going to bid on with a cautious eye. The seller should state that the two stylus of the K are good and that the machine runs quietly through a couple of records. A high number of positive responses with no negatives is a must. Another plus is a machine dealer who will stand behind a mechanical guarantee of performance. Check out local flea markets too. One near Berkeley had a nice Fireside turn up a week ago for $100 with a K but no horn. Often a seller will see no great value when the horn is missing and you can get a very good buy. I hope my comments have helped. Al The Edison Curmudgeon...
