I was one of the ones that was asked to leave on Thursday along with other long time show goers. I have been going to this show for about 22 or 23 years now. I started going back when there was a Spring show in June and one in the Fall. I have always been amazed at the quality of machines that seem to pop up every year. This year was no exception. Some of the best machines never hit the show floor but only the parking lot. I ended up with a great Victor MS with the extended tone arm bracket, tone arm, and correct horn, a very clean pre-dog Victor R to upgrade the one in my collection, a converted Victor M that I will be putting back to a front mount, and numerous parts to complete machines in my collection. On the way down I was able to pick up an Ebay buy of a very nice Victor IV with a spearpoint mahogany horn. I also left the show with a great lead on an Elderidge Johnson model A phonograph that is going to be in my collection soon along with a possible record hold down for my Montross Berliner. My good friend came away with a nice Columbia AS coin-op, an art case Columbia, and a Reginaphone. I also saw many phonographs leaving with first time buyers that might be bitten by the phono-bug. Being turned away on Thursday initially upset me but I can understand. Maybe the early buyer ticket price should include Thursday as well. Or maybe the dealers can agree on a location at the hotel they are staying at to reveal their items for sale. Or on the other hand maybe its time for me to rent a trailer and join in the hysteria of being a dealer. Lord knows I could unload a ton of excess. Either way, I hope the frenzy that is Union lives on forever!!!! I particularly liked the Friday night auction--this was actually the first live phono auction I've attended. (I've never been able to attend Stanton's, and the auctions where I live aren't great.) I managed to get a Columbia BK at an okay price, and I'm sure one at Union would be marked higher; I don't buy machines at the show since the prices are out of my reach. (I go for the records and to meet people.) I think the buyer's premium is ridiculous too, but I think the prices of phonos at the show are more ridiculous, but that's just me. (I'm not rich.) I wouldn't mind going again if there was another one next year. -Ryan And Jasper's palace rocks!!
