Wasn't the definitive two-volume Diamond Disc compendium written by Ray Wile and Ron Dethlefson in 1976 or something? Tim Gracyk connected me with Ron years ago when I found a 1923 Summer Sales Contest jobbers DD with Dalhart singing a song written by one of the contest winners.
