Yes, the "needle chuck" on the 1897 United States Talking Machine
consisted of a hole drilled diagonally through a wooden stick (traveling
arm/tone
arm). The needle was simply inserted into this hole. Ordinary length needles
won't do; they must be almost an inch long.
