Hi Joan (neighbor)... You wrote: "To see collectibles go to a local auction, instead of going to distant 'carers' was always a hard thought for me."
That is certainly my sentiment and I believe the general attitude of most genuine collectors I know. I perform repair work for anybody out there who calls or emails me. But when it comes to selling machines that I have spent hour after hour restoring, for whatever reason, I am always happiest when it "finds a good home". I will sell a phonograph/radio/records/related items or records to anyone of course, but there are just some folks, who when they get them, makes you think of Little Orphan Annie finally ending up in that utopian world. Okay, it sounds corny, but that's gonna just have to be the way it is. I know they are just piles of wood, metal, grease, shellac, and so on, but there is something special about such things winding up (pun intended) in the hands of 'carers' as you called them <sniffle...sniffle... as he wipes the tear rolling down his cheek>... Besides that, think about the auctions that are in our area (Me, and Joan and Bill are only about 35 miles apart). The quality of most of the auctions (hence the clientele) in the south central PA area has diminished greatly over the past 3 to 5 years at least, and anymore most of the premium items are being skimmed off before the stuff ever gets to the auction house and sometimes right off the tables before the auction starts! (I see that more in Baltimore than here though). The average "auction house" down our way has become infested with hardcore flea-marketers and cutthroat dealers. But then there are auctions like Stanton's that you just need to plan for and travel to. I can honestly say that I have never been disappointed at Stanton's. In many ways, Steve and company always seem to be selling museum loads of good stuff. So if you had a significant quantity of premium goodies, I'll bet you could work a consignment with them? Dunno... I'll write to you more in a direct email about dropping over for a visit soon...say in the next few weeks or so? Thanks!! We have been interested, and collecting since 1986, and now, with age, I am ready to downsize collecting, without giving up caring or learning! (Hubby Bill helped me so much with my caring, along the way). To see collectibles go to a local auction, instead of going to distant 'carers' was always a hard thought for me. Over the years, MAPS friends visited us, and I sold things, one-on-one thru snail mail than advanced to the computer, without yet selling on E-Bay. My dream is to sell to those who are also interested while I can enjoy 'seeing it' happen, for so many times I have read of collectors not enjoying this part of the venture....or like the email I saved concerning the theft from the Seiters home, in MI! Betsy and Floyd shared so much with phonograph friends over the years in MAPS!! Although we don't have many rare collectibles, but along the way gathered a little bit of everything, from lots Phonographs to 'all' types records, to postcards, books, miniatures, nipper, related stamps, even Edison's death mask from 'Yesterday Once Again". If anyone on list is ever in southern PA, Dover, and wants to visit soon, please email me to set tyme. If members are looking for a certain 78, D.D. or cylinder, maybe I have it, also just email me! Part of the fun of our hobby is seeing>> collectibles going to a future good home!! Till than, enjoy life,,, Joan Responses appreciated!
