With all respect to Rick, I don't think you want a very durable material in your needle if you are using an acoustic/Orthophonic type reproducer.* The tungsten wire in the Tungstone needle wears fairly easily. It got shorter and shorter as it was used. It is re-usable because it is a constant diameter. Think of a regular pencil lead (conical shape) and a mechanical pencil lead (long thin diameter cylinder). The regular pencil needs to be re-sharpened because as you use it the point gets blunt and WIDER. The Mechanical pencil lead is a small constant diameter. You merely feed more of it out to keep using the pencil. I believe Victor recommended that you run-in a fresh Tungstone needle in the end grooves of a record.
*The durable material would be fine for a light pick up such as some of the early piezio crystals by Astatic. The brand name is "All Brands" and the part number is BAS-SS at $10.00 each. These needles do not use wire but the material is very long lasting and depending on the weight of your reproducer will play up to 250 times or more. As with Tungs-Tone needles, break them in on junk records and never touch the needle until you are ready to dispose of it.
