I suppose the crank is to wind up the batteries.  I could tell by the  
turntable and the little black mounting bracket that the motor would  
turn out to be electric, probably from the '40s or '50s, but was  
surprised to see the batteries.  Obviously from a very cheap  
portable.  This at least keeps it from having to have an AC power  
cord, which would of course ruin the authenticity of the piece as a  
whole!
