If memory serves, the black and brass horns that have "Pat Appld For" stamped in the black metal, very close to the bead where the bell joins the horn were used by Victor. Also, Victor horns typically had a quicker "flare" to the bell. Columbia horns, in general, appear to have a brass bell that follows the line of the cone horn further out, before flaring just closer to the outside edge of the bell. The flare out is much less dramatic.
Hard to describe without having two horns to show you. Please correct me if my information is wrong, but this is what I was taught many years ago. Both the early front mount Victor & Columbia machines used similar black & brass horns. Since the early Victor horns did not have the HMV logo, how do you tell the difference between the Victor & Columbia products? Thanks.
