extremely rare machines?

The answer is "not really". At 41k, the Idelia went for much more than anyone
expected. Probably the 25k reserve was about right for it, but some people
really wanted it badly, and you know what happens at an auction. A multiphone
for 31k would also be very nice, but there might not be as much interest
generated, since it (the lyre case variety) is so large that it would overpower
the space in many homes. As far as the Auxetophone for 25k, someone got a good
deal, since the one on eBay last year sold for $33,800 (and it had a
replacement pump/motor). It is also a bit loud for any room other than a
ballroom, and can set your house on fire. As George Glastris said, the rare
Idelia is just about as beautiful as any you will ever see, and fits nicely (!)
into any collection. Therefore, the demand for it is very high, and that is
reflected in the price. When you get up into prices like these, I don't really
see a big difference between 25k, 31k, and 41k for phonos sold in different
years and in different auction houses.
