Ron,

The photo that Tim has posted is NOT the STRAIGHT, BRASS BELLED grain-painted
horn that Bruce was talking about.? Tim's photo shows the FLOWER horn that was
substituted for the Allen Paper Lacquer Horn on the Victor "VI" during the
Russo-Japanese War.

Thanks,

George Paul

Actually, the TOP photo is the straight, brass-belled, wood-grained body,
horn that also had a "substitution" sticker on it. So, it's clear at least TWO
(and surely more) types were used as substitutes.

Subject: [Phono-L] Slideshow of Sundays MOCAPS meeting
Message-ID: <022d01c7de15$aabe0d90$6401a...@custom>

For those of you who may be interested, here is a link that will take you to a
wonderful slideshow where you will see many of your Collector friends and list
members from MOCAPS (the Massachusetts Old Colony Antique Phonograph Society)
and many of their Phonographs at the meeting held on Sunday at Old Schoolhouse
Number 4 in Hanson, Massachusetts. You will see the interior of the Schoolhouse
which is now a museum and home of the local Historical Society, in addition you
will also see two very nice vintage autos owned by our members as well as the
collectors and their Talking machines.

Here is a link to a great slide show of photos, put together by our Official
photographer, MOCAPS member Jack Whelan. Go to the link and Just click on the
August Mocaps Meeting and then turn up your volume. It will take a little while
for the slide show to get going, and there are some pauses in the photos here
and there, but it is well worth watching for the entire 5 minutes. Hope you
enjoy it.

Dear Ron:
In thinking about "morning glory" horn verses "cygnet" horn one has to take
into consideration that the "cygnet" horns are generally attached to the
reproducer of a
cylinder phonograph whereas the "morning glory" horns are connected to the
soundbox of lateral-cut disk machines through the tone arm so the sound
passage must
include the "morning glory" horn in combination with the tone arm & this
combination would more generally approximate an exponential horn than the
"cygnet" horn
alone.
