Bruce, I don't believe I've ever seen a Linenoid horn for Victor - that's a rare bird!
George -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Thu, 16 Aug 2007 10:15 am Subject: [Phono-L] Linenoid Horn I have a black linenoid horn designed to fit into a victor elbow. It has three narrow gold bands painted around the outside closer to the bell side. I got it on a victor MS several years ago. I'm guessing the original owner upgraded. Anyway it's really too big for a victor MS, more suited for a victor V, D, or VI. The dark laquered look would make it go especially well with a VI but I have only one VI and some horns that suit it better. In-Reply-To: <[email protected]> Message-ID: <00f901c7e10c$17ed18e0$0301a...@daddell> Awwwwww.....Rob said, "Blickfang"...LOL... (I knew that blickfang is German for "eye catching" or "an eye catcher" but it just sorta sounds like it ought to be one of those nasty forbidden words....(Can I get a little help here, a chuckle?...I think my humor missed the mark...<frown>...I better quit...) What is amazing about these inventions is that many intelligent, normal, everyday, otherwise rational people who don't have an understanding of antiques in general or phonographs in particular, cannot discern between genuine artifacts and imposters because they have no experience and they honestly cannot tell the difference right off. But, intelligence is at least on their side, so they can be taught. It really doesn't take much knowledge to be able to see it, but unless you point things out, even egregious things, the uneducated just can't discern. Most of us have had the luxury of learning the look and feel of genuine artifacts long before the present mass production of crap-o-phones even existed (albeit Franken-phones have been around since well before our time or even Loran's!). But, thankfully, we can and do, as collectors, freely provide assistance to others through forums like this. I have been able to point out specific features to other people about these creations (partly by using Loran's writings and also using my own practical knowledge) and have helped more than a few people learn about what to look for and how to identify frauds. The obvious target of their marketing is the uneducated buyer - the fast buck. The inventors and sellers of these aren't trying to dupe folks like us who breathe phonographs like air because they can't and it is especially sad that certain online auctions and venues (I need not mention the biggest one in the world because I don't want to advertise for them) will actually smack your hands and threaten to nix your account if, out of an honest and genuine concern, you try to warn a buyer to be careful. This is yet another reason that I am thankful to be a part of a group of intelligent and educated phonograph collectors like those who contribute to this list who care enough to share their experience and knowledge with others.
