Rich,

I can understand not using oil, but does graphite also do nasty
things to the finish or is it just a pain to clean up (or both)?

Dry graphite can end up being rubbed into the finish and will be permanent. If
it a graphite - oil or
solvent product it will definitely end up in the finish and both the wet and
dry will ruin a turntable felt.
Also stains any unfinished wood. Dry powdered mica will not stick or stain
like graphite. It is also a
better lubricant for locks. The problem with the lock in question is that
there is poor mechanical
advantage to pull the little ears back into the bolt. Any corrosion or dirt
and they stick.

I know people use it and I have seen the mess it can make. Does not do it
every time but do you want to
take a chance.
