(J.M.J.) Maybe I am asking a question that is simple. I have a Caruso 88127 Victor, Red label one side, the number 3 imprinted at 9 o'clock on inner take up, price $3 printed on label. I also have a Caruso 88127 Victrola, a different darker shade of Red label one side, the number 3 imprinted at 9 o'clock on inner take up, no price on label. Now, the book by John Bolig, "Caruso Records" shows number 94, "Aida: Celeste Aida" recorded March 17, 1908 as Martirx C 3180-3. It is listed as Victor 88127----Type 1; see number 176. Number 176 shows "Aida: Se quel guerrier io fossi... Celeste Aida" recorded December 27, 1911 as Matrix C 11423. It is also listed as Victor 88127---Type 2; see number 94. As both records in question have the sub-title ( preceded by recitation "Se quel guerrier io fossi" ) it leads me to wonder which recording is on these records. They sound to me like the same cut, although the records are different and the Victor has a description of the opera on the reverse, the Victrola reverse is blank. Which do I have Type 1 or Type 2, I think Type 1 because of the "take" 3 imprint? And why the two different labels, neither sound like re-issued dubs?
between 0000-00-00 and 9999-99-99 From [email protected] Tue Apr 15 19:31:15 2008 From: [email protected] (Daniel Melvin) Date: Tue Apr 15 19:31:55 2008 Subject: [Phono-L] Aida: Celeste Aida In-Reply-To: <[email protected]> References: <[email protected]> Message-ID: <3d54b81090954158ac48e6b5d811b...@danpc> This is a good question. I'm a Caruso record collector and have wondered about this a few times. I have several versions of this record. I have some 88127 with a 1 at the nine o'clock position and then several with the same number but a 3 as you mentioned. There is also an early version with piano that is number 85022 but it has nothing at all to do with this discussion. The Bolig book does not seem to offer much to go on other than unexplained references to type 1 and type 2 for the two versions of 88127. I decided a few years ago that the 1 meant type 1 and the 3 must mean type 2. But, I don't know if there is anything to that. I too would be interested if anyone out there knows. Does anyone know how to contact John Bolig? It would be a good question for him.
