Message-ID: <[email protected]> Greetings, m' Friends, On page 53 of this March-April, 2008, issue of "Horseless Carriage Gazette" is a photograph of a large "C-cab" Pierce-Arrow truck, with rear tandem, hard-rubber tires, stacked two rows high, eight deep on the bed, with large oak barrels such as those used to age/store and transport beer, wine, alcohol... On the side of the truck is a broad, square sign, maybe 2-1/2 or 3 x 3 feet, with the script: "V.T.M. Co., Camden, N.J." and our doggie and his Berliner in the center listening to "His Master's Voice." The caption under the photograph reads: "The dog and the record player are familiar but what was in all those barrels?" My sentiments exactly. It might be considered where the truck is coming from or going. Maybe the truck is coming from the train station... But didn't VTM Co. have its own rail access? I'm thinking perhaps ingredients for making records? Alcohol for mixing with flaked shellac for phonograph cabinets? Anybody happen to know or hazard a guess? I don't entertain a way to host photos right now, but if anyone needs to see the picture I can snap a digital and e-mail it to you off list. What a cool hobby with all its endless grooves! : ) Edward **************Need a new ride? Check out the largest site for U.S. used car listings at AOL Autos. In-Reply-To: <[email protected]> References: <[email protected]> Message-ID: <[email protected]> Hello Looks like an early attempt at an "automatic" brake. An attachment on the tone arm would touch something on this mecanism causing the brake to engage. (one would of course have to cock it as one began the record.) In one of the pics (P4180108.jpg ) the brake is clearly seen. Also it is positioned strategically where the tone arm would be.
