<<I had a conversation today with Judith Gray head of the Federal Cylinder Project, and Jennifer Cutting transcriber of the folk music division of The library of Congress. We were talking about the playback of the Phonautograph plates. Anyway somwhere in the conversation, I had mentioned the authenticity of the Walt Whitman cylinder, and how most of the collector community was saying it was a fraud, and not real. They said it was authentic, and were not aware that it was in question. And I still came to an iconclusive myself because I myself made a cylinder copy of the poem and the result was not that much different than the supposed fake. I used a glass diaphragm and original blank . > ----------------- The analysis of the 'Whitman' cylinder was published in APM years ago - if they (Jennifer/Judith) want a copy of the details, just let me know. Roscoe Haley was very careful never to show anyone the actual wax cylinder, and the eal to sell it to Yale fell through on that account. Off hand I don't know if it was used on other CK models. Most of them either have or are in the process of disintegrating as many pot metal castings do. If you are in need of one of these arms and or its base, please e-mail Mark directly ASAP and put Columbia Kolster in the subject heading. Mark can be reached at: [email protected] Replying to this message directly will only annoy those on the list who have NFI in the Columbia Kolsters. I don't know what the cost will be but I imagine the more who need one the better. Feel free to forward this notice to other phonograph collecting lists, bulletin boards and forums. Thanks, Ron L
