A similar thing happened among vintage map collectors. In this case, the
perpetrator was a Edward Forbes Smiley III. Here's an overview about him:

And here's the arrest warrant:

What years did this criminal activity take place? The 'Site' is in
reference to what, the Edison Lab in New Jersey or at Stanford?

I have heard of collectors having actual signed documents and signatures of
Thomas Edison. Is this how many collectors got them?

It amazes me that there was no emphasis on security. I just can't imagine
the staff at the Smithsonian letting researchers in and out without some
sort of protocol to prevent this type of thing happening.

Dear Brantley:

Yes, The Site refers to the Edison National Historical Site vault where so
much is stored. Whenever I see an Edison document that was signed I get
suspicious and I get even more suspicious when I see an Edison signature cut
from some document and mounted on a backing of some description. When I see
the signature on a book page cut from book paper stock I am actually somewhat
relieved.

Sadly, when George Frow wanted to update the cylinder phonograph book we
did, the Site limitations kept me from researching areas that now I see
contain many errors.

Best Wishes,

Al

I remember reading about this fellows years ago. APM? Anyway a very long
time ago. The topic continues on and I just need to get the brain cells
working. It seems the subject of Edison's electrical pens was part of the
loot stolen. I remember seeing one on eBay years ago and wondered if was
taken from the site. Are the old brain cells close?

Al, I didn't know that Peterson stole hardware, also. You say he took
HUNDREDS of reproducers? Wow! Did he enter the Site with a
wheelbarrow every day?

Did the Site have records of the serial numbers on the reproducers,
etc., to help in the recovery?
What all did Peterson steal besides documents, reproducers, and a
tinfoil machine? Did the Site ever estimate what percentage they
recovered?
