Subject: Edison Fireside Phonograph featured at Memorial Day Parade Ceremonies

As promised, here is a brief video of Harry C. Humpfrey's 1913 Edison Blue
Amberol Cylinder of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address being played on a 1909 Edison
Fireside Phonograph at the 2009 Memorial Day Parade Ceremonies in Hanson,
Massachusetts. Pior to the Ceremonies and before the arrival of the Parade at
the Civil War Monument & Town Hall Green, I entertained the Parade Spectators
with Patriotic Music Played on both the Edison Fireside A, as well as a
Standard D.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M71E99GEPCU

I must say I was extremely honored & proud to do this. Many of the spectators
and their children came up and asked questions, took photos, and were
absolutely fascinated with the phonographs and delighted with the selections I
played.

The response has been great. It is a John Rogers piece, my friend remembered
that once he read the post.
What a great group to belong to!

I don't know if this is one of his, but it's something that John Rogers could
have produced.???It would be interesting to know if Columbia paid for the use
of the image !

Hi,

The earliest known graphic of these two men laughing seems to date from
1884. At that time, there was no talking machine of course.

But the title, A Capital Joke, goes back to ca 1880 (a musical operetta).
And yes, the Graphophone replaced one of the men, probably late 1890s.
Adaptive advertising was the rule of the day - even the famous painting of the
Old Couple (Edison) replaced an earlier machine - a Puck!

If you can send me a scan of the statuette, I'll look some more.

I am interested in having two large cylinder record cabinets and other large
phono items shipped from New Orleans to Atlanta. Does anyone have experience
in shipping items like this, and could offer suggestions on the least expensive
way to do it. I recall seeing posts about persons that transport victrolas,
etc., but don't have names available. Anyone have experience with Craters &
Freighters or Nationwide Delivery Systems, or similar?
Thanks for your help.

Pete,

Vintage Transport out of Atlanta is great! I used them last month to
transport an antique stove for our kitchen. Not only did they do a wonderful
job
packing, but provided that delivery of the stove 500 lb. stove in our
kitchen!

If interested, let me know. They were also very reasonable!

In my experience, the least expensive shipping for large articles like this
is by Forward Air. Here's their website:

http://www.forwardair.com/

This is a trucking service that specializes in ground transport from one
airport to another. But I don't think they handle retail business. Some
furniture and antique dealers have accounts with them, so you might check
with a dealer to see if you can get connected with Forward Air. If you use
them, you will have to arrange for the packing and crating yourself. Then
Forward Air will deliver to the closest airport to you that they serve, and
you'll have to arrange for pickup at the airport. But it's about half the
cost of any other service I've seen, so it was worth it for me when I had a
Victor 10-35 shipped from New Mexico to Charlotte, NC.
