Greetings Edison Fans, We would like to share with our fellow phonograph enthusiasts the following information on an exhibit we are conducting at Hearthstone Historic House Museum in Appleton, Wisconsin.
Hearthstone Historic House Museum, Appleton, Wisconsin will open the exhibit on May 30th featuring photography with a connection to Thomas A. Edison. On September 30, 1882 Hearthstone Historic House, built for Appleton businessman Henry J. Rogers and family, became the first private home in the world to be lighted by a centrally located hydroelectric station using the newly invented Thomas A. Edison system. On loan from noted collectors, Robin and Joan Rolfs, is a collection of published and unpublished photographs taken by photographer Lewis Lueder. Lewis Lueder was the official photographer to Mr. Thomas A. Edison from 1913 to the 1920's. Mr. Lueder was manager of the Photographic Studio which was part of the Edison Laboratory organization. Cameras that Lewis Lueder used to capture the inventions, candid photos and professional photographs of the great inventor, Thomas A. Edison, will be on display. This collection gives us a glimpse into the professional career of this photographer. Mr. Lueder was compiling a book on photography and his notes are among the artifacts. There are many facets to his work as the official photographer to Mr. Thomas A. Edison and Edison Industries. The exhibit will show photography used in industrial, commercial, social and amateur settings. A tour of the house displays the original electroliers and light switches still in use. Visitors learn about the effect electric light had on society.
