Sounds kind of crazy !! Is there something illegal or unethical about starting your own show, or offering some friendly competition. How bizarre !!

There has been an issue with trading in the parking lot on the Thursday
before the show in the past. That has expanded to exhibitors trading
just about anywhere on Thursday if its officially organized.
I am reasonably certain that there will be more info flowing forth on
this topic.

I see. Certainly if some folks are using the parking lot, that would be a problem. But if they are at the Hess Gas Station down the Street, or have rented some space at some ball field, then what's the problem ?? Certainly nothing wrong with that. Why should someone claim a monopoly on the whole area just based on tradition.

last time as I remember.
If you remember back several years there used to be an auction on
Thursday night and this issue did not really surface until the auction
went away.

So it appears these folks want to be the only game in town? and are blackballing anyone who dares to start there own little trading and selling station, even when it is seperate and apart from their own operation ? That is highly unethical and down right arrogant. Of course this could merely be one of those rumors that gets going, based solely on hear say, and snowballs out of sight. So let's get all of the facts before we all jump on this.

I suspect that by Monday you will have heard all teh history and teh
full story. Last time there was a negotiated truce but no real resolution.

I suspect that most of this is a problem with the d$/dt to the organizers.

"These folks" have spent 30+ years building Union from a couple circus
tents to what it is today. They've served the sellers magnificently and
have every right to preserve the integrity of the show for the buyers.
To start something extra the day before the "main event" is selfish,
greedy AND unethical! And ANYONE who does so should be blackballed by
the Donley's as well as by sellers and buyers!! If another show is
needed, do it the week-end before or after and let the public decide -
don't rip-off somebody elses efforts.
best, Darrell

What if I owned a home right down the street from the Union show and wanted to have my big yard sale that day, and sell some phonographs and records out of my collection, and invited some friends who were visiting Union from out of Town to join me. Would you consider that ripping off the Donley"s ? My little yard sale of phono stuff is certainly not going to keep collectors from visiting the Union show and paying their admission charge. This sort of thing happens everywhere. Up here in the northeast we have the Giant Flea Market in Brimfield every year just north of Sturbridge, and for a wholeweek the locals have their little offshoots of the giant flea market at homes and fields and and whatever open space there is throughout the area, but it certainly doesn't keep people from visiting the big Brimfield event. It is just part of the free enterprise system. Sure these folks are feeding off of the big event, but that is life. No one has a monopoly on free enterprise and the
en
treprenerial spirit. There aren't cops out there, taking down license numbers and checking folks out like the FBI and passing names along so they can be blackballed by the owners of the big event.

I DON'T KNOW THE FACTS -
but if it's what it sounded like, the two individuals mentioned don't
just own a home down the street - they wouldn't be anywhere near where
they are today if it weren't for Union. And to attempt to suck off the
cream a day in advance is simply done out of selfishness and greed. If
it's such a pure entrepreneurial effort, do it the same day!
Does anybody know who's behind the "church gathering"? Is this the
event we're discussing?

I'm at the show and word here is that the pre show was poorly attended
and many doubt it will occur again. As for the whole story I know a
few things but not the while story. Isuspectvi know who is behind it
but I'll leave that to those that can confirm things. I think
darrells assessment is very thougtful and right on the money. The show
should not have and does not deserve a second show as competition.
It's upsurd. I love the union show and it was large and well attended
this year. Lots of unsold good deals so far but I suspect last minute
finished deals will happen Sunday.

I'm at Union and am enjoying the Show very much as usual. Everyone seemed
to be treated fairly this year as far as I know. I didn't go to the
"pre-show" but heard it was not well attended. I do admit missing some of
the "parking lot action" at Union the day before the Show, but when people
started moving the "parking lot action" earlier and earlier until some were
arriving 3 or more days before the Show it was unmanageable.
I like the Union Show and plan to keep coming. For me it's as much about
seeing and greeting old friends as it is about buying and selling. I feel
blessed to know and be around such wonderful people from all over the world.
