Hello all
A correspondent asked me about copyright, and revealed to me that someone else
was selling the book at one point and that it was still under copyright to Leo
Kimmett.  Here is the information on that, to set the record straight, and I
thiank my correspondent because this is something that I think all potential
authors should know about.
Regarding Leo, he died at the age of 93 in 2008, and the copyright on
the booklet expired in 1994. Works copyrighted prior to 1978 (I assume this was
copyrighted originally in 1972 when first published - mine came from Leo
himself and it was not marked as being a copyrighted work) are granted
statutory rights derived from the copyright act of 1909. That act
specified a statutory protection period of 28 years, after which time
the copyright could be renewed. If not renewed, copyright protection
expired.  Works published after Jan. 1 1978 are granted statutory
protection for the duration of the life of the author plus 70 years.
Currently
Leo has one work protected by Copyright, entitled Florissant, Colorado :
a collection of stories, events and the people
associated with one of the remaining communities of historic Colorado".
That work was published in 1980, and will therefore have a very long
copyright life! Whew!
John
