Do you eat strawberries with sweet cream (Christian) or sour cream (Jewish)? Is your family from eastern Europe (Russia, Romania, Besserabia) or Germany/Netherlands? To some it matters. I doubt that Edison was exposed to niceties of this sort, but social placement in relation to his own group was everywhere around him.
