Anyone who has been in business for any length of time winds up
running into persons who seem to be incapable of negotiating in good faith.
For instance, I have had bidders who will place bids with
(apparently) no intention of ever paying for their wins. I'm not
talking about people who lose their jobs or experience unplanned
financial hardships - or even bidders who accidentally win too much.
I'm referring to persons who consistently place bids in every
auction, but who steadfastly refuse to make good on them. This means
that the records have to be relisted in a future catalog, which is an
added expense for the dealer and a disservice to other bidders who
would have otherwise won the records.
A worse scenario occurs when items are shipped out in good faith
before payment is received and the buyer either refuses to pay or
return the goods. Other times a person might win a record, pay for it
and then return an inferior copy of the same record demanding a refund.
To help mitigate our losses, some of the more prominent record
dealers got together a few years ago and began circulating names of
our deadbeat and/or dishonest customers. It was no surprise that many
of the same names appeared on more than one list; indeed, in a couple
of instances we discovered persons using different aliases with
different dealers!
Since culling those folks from our lists, my colleagues and I have
had very few problems with bad apples. Unfortunately (after running a
few ebay auctions) I've stumbled across a couple of shady characters
in the phonograph community previously unknown to me. Communication
with the right persons probably could have saved me well over $1,000,
so I would like to know if there is there a similar list circulating
amongst phonograph dealers. If so, please contact me off-list.
Thanks!
