First of all the two main problems with the R reproducer is a worn stylus and
air leaks. Both will make it sound bad. To test the reproducer for air leaks
gently apply air pressure and gently apply suction, if you have an air leak the
sound will not be good. The R does not have the same volume as the H, it has
less but the sound quality will be better. The S will not be as loud as the K,
but the sound quality is better.
Once you remove the three 1-64 and the weight an offset screwdriver can be used
to separate the bottom or shoe adapter (term I got from Al Sefl who has been a
huge help with my research) from the top. Press against the compression ring.
Once you separate the two the next problem is removing the compression ring.
Sometimes you can use double sided tape and a tool in a vice to remove the
ring, other times you have to drill the ring.
On ones with the pot metal shoe adapter start with a razor blade and work you
way around, then use two razor blades, then a thin knife and so on.
Edison compression rings vary in size from 1.59 to 1.69 so you can sometimes
find a smaller ring to fit the R or S. Some of the raised letter dome tops the
ring will come out easily, I have seen two like that.
