For those of you who did not get the new issue of The Antique Phonograph
that came this week (with the announcement of the MAPS/APS merger - you might
want to "know" about this "new" cylinder. There is a full page article by
Rene Rondeau which basically dives the info on the site I'll link below.

http://tinytimcylinder.wordpress.com/

What I found interesting is that the "new cylinders" were "re purposed"
from old Dictaphone cylinders to fit a standard two-minute Edison Phonograph.
There are only 50 cylinders available - yet there are already five
"reviews" published. (Doesn't that leave only 45?)

Anyway this is the line I found interesting:

NOTE: Every cylinder has been individually made and recorded, one at a
time, just like the original, early Edison cylinders; no mass production, each
cylinder is an original recording, not a dub from a master.

If you watch the three videos (which are interesting) you will see that
Tim recorded the song in Australia electrically and then Ben Canaday (The
Victrola Guy) used the audio of the digital file to individually record the
song on shaved black wax cylinders. So isn't it a "dub"? . And isn't a
recording made from an electrical transcription really be a dub?

Anyway they are being offered for $60 plus $5.50 shipping on the site.

It seems a lot of these NEW cylinders are being sold as "collectibles" but
I wonder if 20 years from now these "repros" will have much value.

Anyway, I wanted to share it with those who haven't heard about it.

Steve Ramm
