I'm just getting caught up after the great ARSC Conference in Chapel Hill which ended last weekend. There were lots of sessions on old recordings and even cylinders. And, folk and early country music fans were in attendance too. My fellow columnist for In The Groove (now The Antique Phonograph), Kinney Rorrer gave a paper on Charley Poole and dealer John Tefteller (who recently paid $39,000 for a Paramount 78) gave a sobering discussion on why we collect and the future of collecting. A panel - including Kurt Nauck - talked about what to do with your collection and how not to burden your heirs. And German collector Rainer Lotz did a wonderful ILLUSTRATED presentation of Nipper trademark infringement on needle tins that showed many rare tins I had not seen in 40 years of collecting! There was something for everyone. (BTW, the audio and pdf of all the presentations will be available free to ARSC members later this summer and makes the ARSC membership a real bargain). Two of my "folk friends" are members of ARSC and came this year for the first time. Dom Flemons (founding member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops) and banjo player and award-winning author Stephen Wade brought their instruments and jammed in the lobby of the hotel to my enjoyment. At the pool outside the Sheraton they were joined by Cary Moscovitz (who did paper on Papa Charlie Jackson and played at the banquet) and Tom Diamant (co-owner of Arhoolie Records) joined them. I posted a great 4 minute video of them on Youtube - I thought you might enjoy). Here is the link: http://tinyurl.com/oas2dps Next ARSC Conference is May 27-30 , 2015 in Pittsburgh.
