I'm sorry for the multiple reporting, but in the advanced search windows I didn't choose the "all" status, so I didn't find the various others error reporting. So, "SORRY SORRY SORRY"!!!! When I try to use the "file_exists" function with php 4.2.3 and Apache 2.0.40, it ALWAYS returns FALSE, even if the file/directory that I'm checking exists.
