Propably some issue with the BETA mysql version used. Assigned to the
mysql maintainer.

if
sapi/cgi/php-cgi -i
can be considered as CGI check, so it doesn't hang

5.1.15-beta
but with same mysql and php-5.2.2 it was OK.

Can you check CGI to see if you can reproduce this.
What version of libmysql are you linking against?
