The mb_ereg_search() is regarding $ as end of line rather than end of
string.
Reproduce code:

print $str ;
mb_ereg_search_init($str, $pattern, "i");
if ( mb_ereg_search() ) {

$r = mb_ereg_search_regs();
}

}
?>
