I reverted the patch.
Please provide a reproduce case for the original problem and then we'll
see what the correct patch should be.

Reproducible with both glibc 2.5 (openSuSE 10.2 64bit) and 2.6.1
(openSuSE 10.3 64bit).
In order to reproduce it you need to run this:
TEST_VAR1=test TEST_VAR2=test valgrind --tool=memcheck ./sapi/cli/php
-r 'putenv("TEST_VAR1"); putenv("TEST_VAR2");'
