Enable the com_dotnet extension in your php.ini.
The extension has been built as shared lately for security reasons.

Simple upgrade from 5.3.6 to 5.3.17 resulted in PHP Fatal error: Class
'VARIANT' not found. PHP code that worked flawlessly under version 5.3.6,
without any change, under version 5.3.17 failed on following line:
$this->_affectedRows = new VARIANT;
