Have you tried to update the linker table before compiling php. I had the same problem in MAC OSX 10.2.4 and just user the linker utility ranlib /usr/local/lib/libmcrypt.a all was fine afterwards Ray A. problem so as told in that bug I've tryed to use the latest STABLE snapshot of PHP but unfortunately still the same result.
