I forgot to mention that this was on PHP_5.0.0b2 not b1. The value for PHP_LIBXML_DIR is checked in too mane places in the configure file!! Here is what I had to do to get it to work: --disable-libxml --without-libxml --disable-dom --without-pear --disable-simplexml --disable-xml And it is still not working. There are way too manythings enabled by default in the configure file.
