This bug has been fixed in CVS. Snapshots of the sources are packaged every three hours; this change will be in the next snapshot. You can grab the snapshot at http://snaps.php.net/. Thank you for the report, and for helping us make PHP better. This will be fixed in the next release apparently. PHP 4.4.2 seems to have files in pear/packages that fail the MD5 test when doing a "make install". This was mentioned in Bug ##36002 and it is apparently fixed in the CVS tree, but the main downloadable tarball hasn't been updated.
