Your .NET forces you to use itself as user handling. PHP is not doing this in anyway. Instead you're supposed to use any technology you want to do that. For instance you might store logged in users in a database. If you you simply count the number of logged in users using an appropriate SQL statement. In case you use sessions you may count the generated session files or whatever you use for session storage.
