        It a used to referance a class method or proporty

Example:
<? 

Class Simple
        {
        
        var $debug = True; // Proporty

        Function Debug($msg) // Method
                {
                if($this->debug == True)
                        {
                        Print($msg);
                        }       
                }
        }

//To call the class you would do something like this 

$simple = new simple();

$simple->debug("This is a test message");

?>
That should be enough to get you started
