John: Yes, CLOBs are a little more difficult to access. The best way I've used them is to use the DBMS_LOB package in Oracle. Here's a link on technet.oracle.com to some documentation.
http://technet.oracle.com/docs/products/oracle8i/doc_library/817_doc/appdev. 817/a76940/adl03pr4.htm#146661 I suggest using this with stored procedures and bind variables. php.net has more info on using stored procedures bind variables.
