You may be bumping into a bug in PHP 4.2.0. There has been some discussion about a problem with socket based (localhost) connections to MySQL with this version of PHP. 4.2.1 release canidate 1 is expected Friday. This should be fixed, along with some problems with using PHP with Apache 2.
