php cannot read the sizes directly, but you can use javascript to pass
information to php and then use that

This is a routine I use to get screen size

<SCRIPT language=JavaScript>
<!--

var screensize = screen.width;

if (screensize <= 640){
  window.location = 'index.php?screensize=640x480' ;
}

else if (screensize <= 800){
  window.location = 'index.php?screensize=800x600' ;
}

else {
  window.location = 'index.php ;
}

// -->
</SCRIPT>

this is on an opening page - which redirects to another page, passing
parameters to php as it goes.

PHP is SERVER side, not browser side.
That's a Javascript question.
