If you're calling a PHP page from Javascript, then you should put the
headers before anything is sent to the browser on that PHP page. For
example,
<?php
header("Content-type: application/octet-stream");
header("Content-Disposition: attachment; filename=excelfile.xls");
?>
<TABLE>
<TR><TD>Header 1</TD><TD>Header 2</TD></TR>
<TR><TD>R1C1</TD><TD>R1C2</TD></TR>
<TR><TD>R2C1</TD><TD>R2C2</TD></TR>
</TABLE>
The table creation can all be done in PHP as well.
If you're building the page using document.write(), things might be
more complicated...
