I think I will blame the documenation though. There is this page about the php.ini: http://www.php.net/manual/en/configuration.php It apparently lacks information about the correct syntax of the ini file ?? If that doesn't work, then more details are needed: What ./configure arguments did you supply PHP? Strace'ing the php binary shows that it even reads the php.ini.
