Okay, so I have a little bit of time.
The error was introduced between versions 1.315.2.1 and 1.315.2.2.
If I comment out the line in question it builds (with crypt() support!) and runs as
ISAPI:
PHP Version 4.0.5RC3
System Windows NT 5.0 build 2195
Build Date Mar 28 2001
Server API ISAPI
I'll bang on it more this evening and see if it breaks.
