This problem was resolved when I increased the stack size. After a while things got flaky though, I am pretty sure that is to do with the threading iPlanet tries to use by default. This can be changed to one thread. I am using a function that uses many functions and many global variables. PHP works fine through the rest of the application, but this one sections just dies, no errors or anything.
